Why September is the best month in Provence
Warm water, quiet villages, the grape harvest and the first figs. The case for coming after the summer crowds.

Ask anyone who lives in the Luberon when they would visit, and most will say September.
The case for it
- The pool is still warm. It holds the summer's heat well into October.
- The villages empty. Gordes on a Tuesday in September feels like Gordes on a Tuesday in 1990.
- The harvest begins. The vendanges start in the first days of the month, and the whole valley smells of crushed grapes in the evening.
- The figs are ready. Our old tree in the courtyard gives more than the kitchen can use.
What changes at the house
Lunch stays outside under the plane trees, but dinner moves into the vaulted dining room as the evenings cool. The kitchen turns to figs, grapes, wild mushrooms and the first of the new olive oil.
Our Autumn Harvest package includes two nights, a morning in the vines with a winemaker and a dinner paired with Luberon wines. It is, quietly, our favourite week of the year.
